The primary role of a Guidance Officer in schools is to support the overall wellbeing and academic success of students. This involves working collaboratively with students, parents, teachers and other professionals to identify and address any issues that may be affecting a student’s learning or behaviour. Guidance Officers provide a range of services, including advice, short-term individual counselling, group programs, psychoeducational assessments and referrals to external agencies as required. They also work to develop positive school environments by promoting inclusive practices and strategies where everyone is treated respectfully and with kindness. Guidance Officers are leaders in handling complex and challenging situations like student protection, critical incidents, mental health and suicide risk reduction. Through their work, Guidance Officers aim to ensure that all students have access to the supports they need to improve their chances of individual success, both in and outside of the classroom. Parents and carers can communicate their concerns to class teachers or the Deputy Principals for consideration of a referral to our Guidance Officer.
